Aiming to help students in Virginia College’s Medical Assistant and Medical Office Administration Programs gain practical experience, Sherman College of Chiropractic has signed on as one of the Spartanburg branch’s exclusive externship partners.
Under the agreement, Virginia College students will complete an externship at Sherman College’s Chiropractic Health Center on its campus at 2020 Springfield Road near Boiling Springs. The Chiropractic Health Center provides approximately 20,000 visits each year to Upstate South Carolina residents. The facility serves as a teaching clinic for chiropractic students who are in their final stage of internship prior to graduation from the 3.5-year Doctor of Chiropractic Program.
Students in Virginia College’s medical programs are required to complete an externship in a physician's office, clinic or related healthcare facility under the supervision of a health services professional. Medical assistants and medical office administrators typically perform administrative and occasional clinical duties; at Sherman, their training will focus on customer service, patient scheduling, medical records and other administrative matters.
“It makes perfect sense for Virginia College and Sherman College to align programs that will provide more opportunities for students in Spartanburg,” says Sherman College Dean of Clinics Adam Morrell, D.C., C.C.S.P., who worked closely with Virginia College to develop the program. “We look forward to working with Virginia College students and we are excited to expose them to a health care career that allows practitioners to bring wellness care to their communities while making a difference in the lives of others.”
“This is an excellent opportunity for both colleges to exchange knowledge,” says Virginia College Medical Assisting Program Director and Sherman College alumna E. Susan Aydin, D.C., C.C.M.A. “By doing so, together, we are able to provide an incredible standard of care for patients. This partnership will offer students beneficial education and practical training for future career opportunities. We are honored to work with Sherman College and the elite doctors of chiropractic that it produces.”
Sherman College continually works to establish academic agreements and pre-chiropractic programs with institutions across the nation to expose prospective students to the profession and to facilitate admission to its Doctor of Chiropractic Program.
