Sociologist and Researcher Dr. Yvonne Villanueva-Russell Receives Layperson of the Year Award

Yvonne Villanueva-Russell, Ph.D., was recently named Layperson of the Year by Sherman College of Chiropractic in appreciation of her outstanding contributions, time and commitment to the chiropractic profession, the public and the college. The award was presented May 28 in Spartanburg, SC, as part of the college’s annual homecoming program.

The Lay Person of the Year Award is given to non-chiropractors who have contributed to the advancement of Sherman College and the chiropractic profession in a significant and noteworthy manner. Dr. Villanueva-Russell, an associate professor and department head at Texas A&M University-Commerce, has focused her research on the professionalization of alternative medicine and the politics of science. She is essentially interested in the dilemma within chiropractic that seeks to gain legitimacy in mainstream medicine while striving to maintain its philosophical roots. Her research has analyzed the role of science, the media and professional identity in this process.

Dr. Villanueva-Russell has been the recipient of the Paul W. Barrus Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching (2004) and was named Honors Professor of the Year (2005) both at Texas A&M University-Commerce. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she completed a dissertation titled, “On the Margins of the System of Professions: Professionalism and Entrepreneurialism in As Forces Upon and Within Chiropractic.” Dr. Villanueva-Russell completed a National Institutes of Health Predoctoral Fellowship at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. She holds M.A. and B.A. degrees in sociology from Western Illinois University.

She has authored several publications including:  “Chiropractors as Folk Devils: Published and Unpublished Coverage of a Moral Panic;” “An Ideal-Typical Development of Chiropractic, 1895-1961: Pursuing Professional Ends Through Entrepreneurial Means;” “Early Advertising and Practice Building in Chiropractic: 1920-1950;”  “Evidence-Based Medicine and Its Implications for the Profession of Chiropractic;” and “The AMA versus Chiropractic: Themes of Opposition From 1963 to 1974.” 

Sherman College named its 2010 award recipients May 27-29 as part of its Lyceum, an annual continuing education and homecoming event which is attended by hundreds of chiropractors throughout the U.S. and internationally. Lyceum is held on the college’s campus in Spartanburg, SC, and involves three days of seminars, special events and other programs.

Upper Cervical Health Centers Co-Founder Ray Drury Receives Service to the Profession Award

Upper Cervical Health Centers co-founder and North Carolina chiropractor Ray Drury, D.C., recently received the Service to the Profession Award from Sherman College of Chiropractic in appreciation of his extraordinary, unselfish and noteworthy service to the chiropractic profession. Dr. Drury was recognized Memorial Day weekend in Spartanburg, SC, as part of the college’s annual homecoming program.

Second-generation chiropractor Dr. Drury graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1990 with a degree in Human Biology and earned his doctor of chiropractic degree from Logan College in 1993. He opened his first Upper Cervical practice in a small town in North Carolina. In less than a year, Dr. Drury opened his second office. He since has opened and successfully operated three more Upper Cervical practices during his 14 years in business.

Dr. Drury has spent years developing reproducible, turnkey systems to build his Upper Cervical practices to some of the busiest, most profitable in the world. He has been teaching Upper Cervical doctors how to use these same systems to build high volume, low stress practices since 1998, and he now works full-time coaching doctors practicing all over the world, based on the same systems he developed for his own successful offices.

Dr. Drury is the co-founder and CEO of Upper Cervical Health Centers (UCHC), a network of chiropractic offices that focus on providing upper cervical chiropractic care across the United States and Italy. The company is 46 offices strong and growing. He teaches seminars on Upper Cervical practice building at a variety of different colleges and schools, is a sought after speaker at conferences and seminars, and helps organize UCHC seminars and Boot Camps.

Michigan Chiropractor Levi Pulver Named Rising Star by Sherman College

Chiropractor Levi Pulver, D.C., originally from Mason, MI, was recently named Rising Star by Sherman College of Chiropractic in appreciation of his contributions, time and commitment to the chiropractic profession, the public and the college. The award was presented May 28 in Spartanburg, SC, as part of the college’s annual homecoming program.

Sherman College’s Rising Star award is given to a recent Sherman graduate who has demonstrated exceptional achievements. Dr. Pulver, in a very short time, has built a thriving chiropractic practice in Spring Lake, MI; he opened Pulver Chiropractic (www.pulverchiropractic.com) in March 2009. Previously he worked as an associate in Holland, MI, and with fellow Sherman alumnus Dr. Jon Woolston in Mason, MI.

A 2005 Sherman graduate, Dr. Pulver is a coach and board member for Total Trek Quest, an after school running program for 3rd-5th grade boys which aims to increase boys’ health and wellness while preventing high risk behaviors by using physical activity and training. He also serves as the youth and sports director for the Grand Haven Area Jaycees and recently completed a project with a small community group to build a playground for the Salvation Army Transitional Housing Program.

An avid runner, Dr. Pulver will complete his 10th marathon this October in Chicago with the Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization. His five-year goals include opening a second chiropractic practice and completing his certification with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.

South Carolina Chiropractor Justin Snider Named Career Advisor of the Year by Sherman College

Chiropractor Justin Snider, D.C., of Laurens, SC, was recently named Career Advisor of the Year by Sherman College of Chiropractic in appreciation of his contributions, time and commitment to growing the chiropractic profession. The award was presented May 28 in Spartanburg, SC, as part of the college’s annual homecoming program.

Sherman College’s Career Advisor of the Year distinction is given to an individual who has consistently referred students to Sherman College. Though a recent graduate himself (March 2010), Dr. Snider has been inspiring others to become chiropractors and has referred students to Sherman College while a student and now while in practice at The Gateway Clinic of Chiropractic which he recently established.

Dr. Snider served as a tour guide for visiting prospective students during his three and one-half years of study at Sherman College. As a tour guide he volunteered to lead a group of students at nine career events on campus. He was named Tour Guide of the Quarter a record three times and also Tour Guide of the Year.

Snider personally referred two students while enrolled at Sherman and at least five others have indicated that his campus tours and time spent with them greatly influenced their decision to enroll at the college. Snider continues to be active in helping recruit chiropractic students, especially at his alma mater, Newberry College as well as at Clemson University.
