Sherman Graduation Happens Saturday in Downtown Spartanburg

Sherman graduation happens downtown at the Chapman Cultural Center tomorrow.

In fitting attire at the Spartanburg Science Center (east wing) is Shermie, the Bird of Prey sculpture on loan from Sherman College to the science center. Read more about this collaboration between Sherman and the science center in an earlier blog post.

Congratulations graduates! We’ll be sorry to see you go, but happy to know that another group of Sherman Chiropractors will be out there bringing subluxation centered chiropractic to the world.

We've got our second annual Sherman Alumni Oyster Roast planned for Saturday, November 22. Alumni and friends of the college are invited. Even if you don't live in the Charleston, SC, area, but want to take a weekend get-away, please join us. I hear that a couple of alumi from Michigan are planning to vacation at the coast that week and are planning to join us at the Folly Beach weekend home of Dr. Dale and Debbi Friar for the event.

We just need to know you are coming by Monday, November 18 so we can order enough food! If you don't eat oysters (and why not?) then you can indulge in the Frogmore Stew and refreshing beverages.

A big THANK YOU! to Dale and Debbi for welcoming us at their Folly Beach house this year. Dale is orginially from Michigan and met Debbi while at Sherman. She's a Spartanbug gal. After practicing in Michigan for a decade and a half, they moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC, and started over. Dale has a busy practice on Hwy 17 at the expressway over to Sullivan's Island. Dale and Debbi are great folks and we greatly appreciate the use of their home for this event.

Last year the oyster roast was at Bowen's Island Restaurant, famous for it's oysters and seafood. Robert Barber, owner of the restaurant has agreed to cater this year's event at the Friar's house. Yippee! They've got some of the best oysters to be had on the SC coast. Thanks to alumnus Farrel Grossman who recommended Bowen's Island last year.

So, will I see you in Charleston? I hope so! Here are the details.

PA Reunion was Fun

The ADIO/PCSC Reunion was last night. I'll upload some photos as soon as I can and let you glimpse at the action. The highlight for me was listening to everyone introduce themselves and tell how they are connected to Penn Straight. The pioneer class alumni also shared memories from the college's early days. Sherman College is proud of these trailblazers and priviledged to hold their academic records after their alma mater closed. I feel honored to have been a part of their reunion and look forward to seeing them on campus for Lyceum next month.

Philadelphia Area Alumni Events

I'm in the area north of Phillie this week for 2 alumni events--a reunion party in Fort Washington for ADIO Institute / Penn Straight alumni, administrators, faculty and staff on Saturday, April 5 and a reception for Sherman alumni and friends in Harleysville on Tuesday, April 9. In between the two events I'll be visiting at alumni practices.

I arrived tonight and met FSCO representative Renee Hillman for dinner and a high school musical. We went to Freedom High School to see Bye, Bye Birdie, a really fun performance. I was impressed with the talent of these young people, some of whom may one day come to Sherman College to study chiropractic (and entertain us on campus at a future Spizz Day). I was especially impressed with Amanda Kostalis as Rose. She had a great voice. I also liked Cameron Benda who played Harvey Johnson with a great deal of enthusiasm and expression.  It was fun a fun way to start my visit to Pennsylvania. Tomorrow night is the Penn Straight Reunion so I'll be heading down to Fort Washington in the early afternoon. I'm eager to see Sandy Levenson and Judy Campanale who planned the event and catch up with them as we set up the banquet room with displays and favors. Dave Smith will be joining us to set up his sound equipment. In addition to practicing chiropractic he's quite the DJ.

Of course our president Jon Schwartzbauer will be attending as well as several Sherman alumni who served as faculty, administrators or board members. It will be great to see old friends and meet some new ones.

Alumni Reception in Las Vegas

Alumni from four countries attended a reception hosted by Sherman College President Jon Schwartzbauer and Director of Admission Lisa Hildebrand in Las Vegas, NV, February 7. Though it was not a huge gathering, it was quite international.

The reception took place at the Parker Seminar where Sherman was exhibiting and visiting with alumni and friends of the college. Alumnus Philip Delit from France was honored by Parker College as International Chiropractor of the Year. He met President Schwartzbauer at the reception as did Don Murray from New Zealand, Derek Fleschner-- an American who is practicing in Ireland-- and alumni from one side of the country to the other.

A handful of Sherman students who are members of the Sherman World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) also mingled with alumni at the reception.

I wish I had been there to say hi to everyone! Lisa and Josh did a great job taking photos. See who was at the reception by viewing the photos.

Oyster Roast Was Yummy!

The first of what we hope will become an annual event, the Sherman College Alumni Oyster Roast, was a yummy success.  Alumni and friends in the Charleston, SC, area joined Sherman College President Jon Schwartzbauer, D.C., his wife, Mitzi Schwartzbauer, D.C., their daughters Sophi and Jozi, Vice President for Advancement Susan Newlin and her husband, Baron, and me for piles of fresh oysters and plates of low country boil, not so mention good conversation, and a walk on the dock. ADIO/Penn Straight Reunion

This posting is long overdue.

The first ever all-school reunion of ADIO Institute of Straight Chiropractic/Pennsylvania College of Straight Chiropractic happened on Sunday, November 19, 2006, in Kulpsville, PA, north of Philadelphia. More than 100 alumni, former administrators, faculty and trustees of the now closed college attended.

I was honored to be able to attend this function and meet more of the Penn Straight alumni and key players in the history of that college. I have to say that there were three outstanding organizers of the event who devoted much time and effort and poured their hearts into planning a great program to formally thank those who were instrumental in forming and leading the college including the Founders, Board of Directors, administration and faculty. Drs. Judy Campanale 1992, Gwen Gardner, 1988, and Sandy Levenson, 1981, are to be commended for their hard work.

Sherman College holds the academic records of the alumni and a collection of memorabilia donated to and housed in the ADIO/Penn Straight Room on campus.  Sherman Interim President Thomas A. Gelardi, D.C., Alumni Association President Alan Brewster, D.C., of Passaic Park, NJ, and Vice President for Institutional Advancement Alan Duesterhaus, Ed.D., represented Sherman College at the event.

Because the reunion was such a success, the committee plans to organize a bigger and better all-school reunion in November 2007.

Sherman grads get together in New Zealand

I received this photo and bit of fun news from Dr. Janine Dobson, '82, in New Zealand. Isn't it grand that alumni so far away from Spartanburg can email digital photos and news and we can receive and share them so quickly? Remember the old days when we took a photo, it sat in the camera for weeks or months until we finished the roll, then it got developed and we had had prints made. Then we'd mail them off to be received days or weeks later by the recipient. Ah, those were the days! Not!

Says Janine,

Recently several girlfriends and Sherman graduates in New Zealand caught up to celebrate old times. We met at my home. The idea for the get together came when I met with Dr. Valerie Pennacchio, '90, who is down under teaching at the New Zealand Chiropractic College. Valerie expressed a desire to catch up with Drs. Theresa and Lisa Dobson who graduated in 1996 and 2000. We chose a night when another graduate, Dr. Lelie Sise, '98, was visiting from the South Island of New Zealand. Frances Adam (whose late husband Dr. Lew Jones graduated with Janine in 1982 is also an old friend of Valerie’s) was invited as well as Dr. Lynnette Stewart, '87. Many laughs were had over dinner and desert. Our shared experiences over the years brought us together and the commonality of our choice of college and our many and varied shared experiences in South Carolina make us friends for life.

Alumni Dinner in Seattle

A group of 19 Seattle area alumni, guests and Sherman College representatives gathered at the Palomino Restaurant in downtown Seattle October 7 for a delicious meal, good conversations and meeting fellow alums from different eras and area towns.

I had the great pleasure of coordinating and promoting the event and the even greater pleasure of being in Seattle to greet attendees. Now that I'm back on campus I have uploaded some of the photos from my trip in a new photo album.

Faculty member Ron Castellucci, Regent Dick Plummer and Penn Straight Alum and FSCO President Judy Campanale were in Seattle to present a continuing education seminar and joined us for dinner.  What a grand time we had visiting and getting to know our alumni! I was especially impressed with the folks who drove more than an hour to attend! Now, that's the Sherman spirit!
