Visiting with Alums in Michigan

I recently returned from the Michigan Association of Chiropractors Convention in Kalamazoo where I was wo-manning the booth for Sherman College in the exhibit hall. It’s a huge state convention with rows and rows of exhibitors. I heard that there were more than 700 chiropractors there. Working this convention gave me a chance to visit with lots of our alumni, including Aaron Fisher who just recently (like 3 weeks ago) opened an office in nearby Jones, MI. As are many, many Sherman alumni, Aaron is loving his work and being in practice.

Sunday morning our president, Dr. Jon Schwartzbauer, and I hosted a breakfast for Sherman alumni at the convention. Dr. Jon shared news from the college and I showed alumni the new look of our college website on a laptop computer. Click here to go to www.sherman.edu and see the new look yourself.

We were also able to talk about the clinic challenge program being implemented next week and then showed video clips of the Sherman Health Center faculty and staff training on the low ropes course on campus which is part of the clinic challenge.

As Dr. Jon talked about the construction of the Helen and Gordon Brown Student Plaza between the Scallon and Taylor Buildings, I showed a computer animation of the area. This virtual tour was posted on our Pardon Our Progress blog last spring. Click here to see the video. The plaza is such a nice place for students and employees alike to enjoy our great weather here in South Carolina. The plaza features benches and pleasant walkways, a fountain, amphitheater, and wireless internet.

One of our admission counselors, Daria Winnicka, who was in Michigan visiting colleges and universities and meeting prospective students, joined us for breakfast and also helped at our exhibit table. In fact, she hosted a career gathering with prospective students at the hotel during the convention. Happy Birthday Chiropractic!

Chiropractic is marking its 113th birthday today. So let's go back in time and learn about the beginning of this great profession. We find ourselves in Davenport, Iowa, in 1878, where a janitor named Harvey Lillard is working in a stooped, cramped position. He feels something “pop” in his neck. A few days later his hearing is gone.

Seventeen years pass in silence. Then, on September 18, 1895, Lillard relates his story to Daniel David Palmer, a magnetic healer who practices in the Ryan Building where Lillard works.  Palmer felt and saw a bump in the area where Lillard said he had felt the pop. Reasoning that this bump was one of the spinal column’s 26 vertebrae out of line, Palmer persuaded Lillard to let him try to move it back to its normal position. When he did, there was another pop, and the bump was gone. In a few days, Lillard regained his hearing.

Thus, chiropractic was born on September 18, 1895.

Student Assemblies Feature Successful Alumni

Two Sherman alumni were on campus in recent weeks to deliver assembly talks on successful practice building. I had the pleasure of attending both assemblies, one of the wonderful perks of working here at Sherman College.

Both alumni did a great job delivering engaging talks that included practical advice for soon to be chiropractors. Tyrone Wallace ’94, (pictured giving his presentation) who practices in Lake City, SC, and is a member of the Board of the South Carolina Chiropractic Association, was here on August 20. Despite the fact his wife was ready to give birth to their 4th child any day, Dr. Wallace delivered a seamless presentation and had the students laughing at his humorous comments about dealing with the practical side of running a business.

Jason Kolber, ’98, of Phoenix, AR, traveled across country to share his practice tips and compliment the Sherman faculty and staff who had an impact on him during his three plus years at Sherman. Kolber met his future wife (Elissa Katz) at Sherman and they have a four-year-old daughter. In addition to the assembly, Kolber spoke to students in several classes. He is pictured talking with students after his presentation.

As a follow up to my last post, I'd like to share a video that the Spartanburg Herald Journal made about the Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center and posted on their website in conjunction with the two articles about the college. Another video I've been wanted to share with you is one made at the recent World Congress of Chiropractic Students in Mexico City, Mexico last month. Students from all over the world, including 9 from Sherman, converged on Mexico and presented proposals to advance the profession. Watch the video to see what WCCS means to them.
