The next opportunity for students to experience Showcase Sherman is fast approaching! Our January Showcase Sherman was a sell-out and we are expecting the May Showcase Sherman to be sold out as well!
The May Showcase Sherman is unlike any of the other Showcase weekends. The May open house is scheduled at the same time as Sherman Lyceum. Sherman Lyceum is a homecoming for Sherman graduates (known as Shermies), and last year more than 600 chiropractors came from around the globe to socialize, learn and have fun!
Prospective students have an opportunity to experience the best of Sherman College of Chiropractic, and be inspired by some of the best minds in chiropractic.
Chiropractors! If you have patients or CA's that you think would be great chiropractors, why not bring them to Showcase Sherman during Lyceum? Last year, a chiropractor from Sweden brought a prospective student with him! And you can earn your CE credits at the same time!
Over the last two months, I have been meeting students interested in becoming a chiropractor. Some students have done their homework and understand the difference between a DC/DO/PT. Most students are only researching in their immediate geographic area. Many students have not heard about Sherman College of Chiropractic, let alone Spartanburg, South Carolina!
Chiropractic colleges are not all the same. While there are specific educational requirements that all colleges must teach, there are differences that can impact your career as a chiropractor. Before investing $100,000 in a program, it is important to do your research. I know many chiropractors that say that they would have chosen to attend a different chiropractic college, if they knew then what they know now!
Here are some suggestions of questions to ask before choosing a chiropractic college:
1. What techniques can I learn while enrolled at the college?
2. Will I learn and gain proficiency in more than one chiropractic adjusting technique?
3. Are classes taught that will help you be successful in practice?
4. What are the national board passing rates?
5. What are the student loan default rates?
6. Do most students complete the program? What is the attrition rate?
7. What student clubs and activities are on campus?
8. What is the total cost of the education? Are there scholarships available?
9. How strong is the alumni support? Are they willing to mentor students and new graduates?
Most of these questions can be answered by researching a college's website or by visiting campus. I recently heard of a student that has transferred from two chiropractic colleges to their third and hopefully, final college.
Showcase Sherman is Sherman College of Chiropractic's weekend event that brings prospective students to campus to meet current students, have their questions answered, and see and feel the Sherman difference. The next Showcase Sherman is January 30 & 31, 2015, and if you are interested in attending, you can register at www.sherman.edu/showcase.
The fall recruiting season for Sherman for me began two weeks ago in Pennsylvania! Sherman College of Chiropractic has an articulation agreements with Mt. Aloysius in Cresson, PA and Bloomfield College in New Jersey. I stopped in to visit with the advisors and share information about Sherman, and invite students to attend Showcase Sherman.
What is an articulation agreement?
An articulation agreement is an academic agreement with a partner college for the purposes of transferring to Sherman. Sherman has several 3+1 agreements with colleges that allows a student to complete their senior year at Sherman, while simultaneously beginning chiropractic college. This saves one year of education, and one year of tuition! Sherman College has agreements with colleges in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Tennesee, Puerto Rico and South Carolina.
Additionally, Sherman has agreements with community colleges for students that know that they are going to practice in a state that doesn't require a BA/BS degree. Information and links for colleges that Sherman has articulation agreements with can be found here.
It is exciting to attend career and graduate fairs across the country, and meet with bright young students that have been under lifetime chiropractic care, and are choosing to become doctor's of chiropractic.
Currently, I am in Salt Lake City, Utah, attending Grad fairs, and it is an amazingly beautiful area for students to be studying. Mountains surround the colleges, and I was surprised that the temperature here was almost 90 degrees during my stay!
Utah Valley University began as a 2 year technical college, then became a community college, then a state college to a full university. It is smartly designed---ecofriendly, and all the buildings are connected and covered for the winter months. UVU demonstrates a commitment to a vision, and sustained, planned growth and development. And that is what going to chiropractic college is like!
It takes 90 hours of pre-requisites, and as a student, those 90 hours may feel like you will never finish! It's the preparation phase, and the foundation for the classes that you will study once you begin chiropractic college.
Here are some short videos that highlights some students and why they chose Sherman.
It is a joy to visit with students who are searching for their career paths, as well as the students who have already chosen chiropractic as their path. I met one student in North Carolina who has been under care since his teen years. His family had exhausted all other options for him (he had a bladder issue), and then someone told his mother about chiropractic. Within a few months, he no longer had his issue and could enjoy being a teenager—instead of worrying about accidents! His father is an anesthesiologist and is happy to see his son choose chiropractic as a career.
I met another student at Appalachian State who has chosen chiropractic as her career. She has shadowed five D.C.s and is on a full undergraduate scholarship. The most amazing part—she has never been adjusted! Her mother had severe migraines and was often in bed for days at a time, and this student watched her mother regain her life under chiropractic care, and she knows that “becoming a chiropractor is my calling.”
It is exciting to share chiropractic with students who may not have been considering a career in chiropractic. Students are full of hope for their future and are trying to discover where their piece of the puzzle belongs in the world. It is my goal during my travels to inspire the next generation of students to become Sherman graduates and have fulfilling careers in chiropractic!
