Sherman Returns to Original Name: Sherman College of Chiropractic

Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic is now known as Sherman College of Chiropractic. The college’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to authorize the college’s name change on October 17, 2009, during its fall meeting.

Sherman College of Chiropractic is the name under which the college was founded in 1973; the college added the word “straight” to the name in the late 1970s.

“The college will always remain true to its roots, providing a curricular focus on traditional chiropractic,” says Sherman president Jon C. Schwartzbauer, D.C. “Our founding name better reflects who we are – a contemporary educational institution committed to providing the best education possible, an institution with a strong commitment to educational progress, and an institution geared to meeting the demands of chiropractic students, both today and in the future.”

College personnel will spend the coming months revising college promotional materials as well as the college web site to reflect the change.

Fall 2009 Clinic Challenge

 

Students entering the clinic phase of the curriculum at Sherman completed the Clinic Challenge on Monday and Tuesday, September 28-29, 2009. Many will tell you it's a life-changing experience.

The Clinic Challenge Experience was designed to help students make a successful transition from classroom to chiropractic internship by sharpening their professional focus, energizing their passion for chiropractic and exposing them to success principles for practice. The ropes course on Sherman's campus consists of a variety of challenges — using ropes, pulleys, walls, platforms, poles — all of which present participants with the opportunity to use problem-solving skills and teamwork. Facilitators and teammates encourage participants to face and overcome whatever fears are blocking their ability to accomplish the tasks. 

It's been about six months since our last Clinic Challenge -- we do one in spring and one in the fall. You can read much more about the Clinic Challenge here (or here).

Service to Sherman College Award: Marggi Dobos Roldan

Marggi Roldan served as Sherman’s publications editor and public information officer from 1980 to 1987. After spending 10 years with the Beta Club, she returned to Sherman College in 1997 to serve as the development and alumni affairs coordinator, then director of institutional advancement and currently as director of alumni relations.

She is a dedicated professional with 29 years of experience in communications, public relations and donor relations. She has a keen understanding of chiropractic practice and philosophy and talent for translating complex concepts, terminology and jargon into plain English and transforming everyday language into professional communications. 

She is a skilled communicator with a reputation for efficiency, dependability, accuracy and diplomacy and goes the extra mile in providing services to Sherman alumni. She is dedicated to Sherman College, its Mission, its students, and alumni and can be counted on to do whatever is asked of her.

In addition to her responsibilities with alumni relations Marggi has served as

• President, Altrusa International of Spartanburg, 2007-08
• Advisor, Sherman World Congress of Chiropractic Students
• Past President, Sherman College Staff Association
• Editor, Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations Insider, 2002-2005.

She has received numerous awards including

• APEX (award for publication excellence), Organization Image Booklet, 1991
• APEX, Feature Writing, 1992, for “How to Get Media Coverage for Your Club”
• EFfie (award for newsletter excellence) Honorable Mention, Best Overall, 1994 and 1995
• Continuous Commitment Award, Leadership Development, Inc. (Dale Carnegie Group), 1997
• Margaret P. Adams Award for community service, Altrusa Club of Spartanburg, 2000
• Service Award, Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations, 2003
• Honorary Membership in Sherman College Alumni Association, 2006.

 

Rising Star Award: Dr. Nick Tedder

A December 2004 graduate, Dr. Nick Tedder, in a very short time, has built a thriving upper cervical practice at the Upper Cervical Health Centers of Georgia where he is owner and CEO.        

Tedder has considerable expertise in training, public health education program development and implementation. He instructs, teaches and coaches new doctors on how run and maintain an upper cervical practice as well as instructs on marketing, office management, patient and clinical management and lectures on community/corporate wellness.

Tedder has advanced certification in Knee Chest Upper Cervical Specific and the Brain Stem procedure and is currently working on Masters level certification. In addition, he is completing a residency in Functional Neurology and Diplomat in Chiropractic Neurology at the Carrick Institute of Graduate Studies.

He was named Intern of the month at Sherman in 2004 and has received the Big Idea Award in 2008 and the Visionary Award in 2009 presented by Upper Cervical Health Centers. He is a member of the International Chiropractic Association, Georgia Chiropractic Association, World Chiropractic Association, National Academy of Physicians and Upper Cervical Health Centers of America (team member). Dr. Tedder exemplifies a true rising star in chiropractic.
