Schwartzbauer Steps Down as Sherman College’s Fourth President

Sherman College’s fourth president, Jon C. Schwartzbauer, D.C., has announced today that he is stepping down. Dr. Schwartzbauer has served as the college’s president since 2007 and has been a member of the faculty and administration for 10 years.

“I have seen Sherman College surpass expectations many times, in many ways, and I know the college has the potential to be truly exceptional,” Dr. Schwartzbauer said. “I am honored to have been part of that path.” He says he will oversee day-to-day operations and serve the college as needed while the Board of Trustees embarks on a search for the college’s next president. The Board of Trustees is looking for a new leader to take the college through its next opportunities for growth.

During his tenure as president, Dr. Schwartzbauer has seen Sherman College through reaffirmation of both its institutional and programmatic accreditation. He has improved student learning and led the implementation of a comprehensive chiropractic curriculum, enhancing the college’s ability to graduate primary health care professionals who are highly skilled, compassionate, ethical and successful. In addition, Dr. Schwartzbauer managed the conversion of the college’s on-campus Chiropractic Health Center to a patient-centered model, which has improved both patient care and student learning outcomes.

Dr. Schwartzbauer took on the presidency during a tumultuous time as the college faced probation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for its Quality Enhancement Plan and several student and academic policy issues. Through his leadership and the diligent work of the college community, the college was ultimately removed from probation and had its accreditation reaffirmed in 2009. In addition, the college received two commendations during its October 2011 team visit from the Council on Chiropractic Education– one specifically commending the doctor of chiropractic degree program for “the leadership, commitment and dedication of the [Sherman College] community regarding the cultural, mission and curricular changes.”

A 1997 Sherman alumnus, Dr. Schwartzbauer previously served the college as vice president for academic affairs, director of the Leadership and Practice Management Institute and a member of the Chiropractic Health Center faculty. He ran Schwartzbauer Straight Chiropractic Center in Mahtomedi, MN, for five years before he joined the Sherman College faculty in 2002. He also served as a team chiropractor for the St. Paul Saints, a minor league baseball team in his home state of Minnesota. In addition to the doctor of chiropractic degree he earned in 1997, Dr. Schwartzbauer holds a bachelor’s degree from Excelsior College.

Devoted to Chiropractic: In Memory of Reggie Gold

Reginald R. Gold, D.C., Ph.C., referred to simply yet reverently as “Reggie” by most, died at his Bala Cynwyd,  PA, home on March 24, 2012. A lecturer, philosopher, author and Sherman College benefactor, Gold traveled the globe spreading the chiropractic message and is responsible for inspiring hundreds, likely thousands, of people of all ages to pursue careers in chiropractic. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Irene Gold, D.C.

“Reggie did so much to advance the profession and Sherman College,” says Sherman President Jon Schwartzbauer, D.C. “We may never see another in our profession with the ability to communicate chiropractic so clearly and effectively. Reggie touched so many lives, including mine. He will be deeply missed.”

A charismatic chiropractic scholar and philosopher, Reggie Gold graduated summa cum laude from Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1957 and served in various leadership capacities in state and national organizations. He also held a Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities (Ph.C.) from Palmer. Gold’s practice in Spring Valley, NY, was a model for chiropractic practices around the world for many years; he developed and successfully marketed a series of techniques and products to help chiropractors gain patient confidence and build their practices.

Gold assisted in the startup of Sherman College, helped establish and served as first president of ADIO Institute which later became Pennsylvania College of Chiropractic, taught philosophy at three chiropractic colleges (including Sherman, from 1973-76) and lectured at most of the others. He is author of The Triune of Life, a treatise on traditional chiropractic philosophy that is used as a reference text in philosophy courses at Sherman College.

In addition, he lectured at medical schools from Mount Sinai to Stanford, as well as educational institutions overseas in South Africa, Australia and Peru. Gold was instrumental in founding the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations (formerly FSCO) and introduced the profession to a clearer philosophical understanding of chiropractic.

He was a popular visiting scholar at Sherman College, and through the years he played a vital role in the college’s recruitment efforts. He spoke many times at the college’s annual Career Day program.

Sherman College commissioned a bronze sculpture in his honor that is housed in the Scallon Building atrium and reception area. Unveiled during Lyceum 2007, the bust sits atop a tall pedestal near the front entrance and bears one of Gold’s popular quotes on the inscription: “If you are not out to change the world, everything else is Mickey Mouse.”

Gold and his wife, Irene, a chiropractor and owner and leader of Irene Gold Associates, made a generous gift to Sherman College when they gave $1 million in the form of a charitable gift annuity in 2007. “Our lives have been dedicated to the chiropractic profession and to the education of chiropractors worldwide,” Gold said at the time. “Sherman is home to outstanding faculty, alumni and students. It is an honor to support the next generations of straight chiropractors.”

College Town Service Initiative brings students together

Seven institutions, City present 9th annual CSI on Saturday, April 14

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Hundreds of students from Spartanburg’s seven colleges and universities will come together to make Spartanburg a better place on Saturday, April 14, as they participate in the ninth annual “CSI: College Town Service Initiative,” providing services to about a dozen service agencies around the community.

“The goal of CSI is for students to work with community organizations and students from other colleges with whom they may not normally have contact, and that they will come away more invested in the Spartanburg community,” Rogers Brandt, College Town coordinator says. “What begins with a few Saturday hours of hard work for agencies that need the help often becomes a lifelong commitment to serving the community.”

This year, students will be doing work for these agencies:

• Christmas In Action – Making lunches for volunteers and helping at specific home sites for the agency
• The Shepherd’s Door – Gathering food donations at The Fresh Market and Sam’s Club
• Clifton Cemetery (located on Cherry Hill Road/State Road 817 off East Main Street past Zion Hill Road) – Maintenance and litter pick up
• Camp Mary Elizabeth – Landscaping and maintenance
• Hollywild Animal Park
• Children’s ReStore Center
• Spartanburg Humane Society --- Making dog toys and caring for animals
• Palmetto Hearts 5k Run (Duncan Park)
• SPACE (Spartanburg Area Conservancy)
• Northwest Recreation Center (710 Saxon Ave.) -- Painting

The day for students participating in CSI will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Andrews Field House at Wofford College, with a light breakfast. Students who registered by April 5 will receive their T-shirts; others will receive shirts on a first-come basis. 

Chris Steed, CEO and president of the United Way of the Piedmont, will give the opening remarks beginning at 9 a.m. Then, students will go out in groups to work on their projects from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  They will return to the Andrews Field House at Wofford for reflection on their work and impact, followed by lunch in the Burwell Dining Hall.

CSI is a project of the College Town consortium, a collaboration of the City of Spartanburg and the institutions of higher education in Spartanburg County – Converse College, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), Sherman College of Chiropractic, Spartanburg Methodist College, Spartanburg Community College, the University of South Carolina Upstate, and Wofford College.

Sherman Shows Heart with Free Valentine Visits, Donations to Oklahaven

Interns and clinic doctors at Sherman College of Chiropractic recently showed their appreciation for health center patients, offering more than 120 free chiropractic visits during “Sweetheart’s Day” on February 14. The college’s on-campus Chiropractic Health Center also raised money for Oklahaven Children’s Chiropractic Center.

During Sweetheart’s Day, current clinic patients were offered a free visit, and many took advantage of the offer, resulting in a busy day for interns and supervising faculty. “We wanted to celebrate current patients and show them how thankful we are that they trust the Sherman Health Center for their chiropractic care,” said Dean of Clinics Keith Henry, D.C. “Valentine’s Day was a great fit for showing our appreciation.”

The college took further advantage of the February 14 date by participating in an annual “Have a Heart” campaign, accepting donations for Oklahaven Children’s Chiropractic Center. Oklahaven, a nonprofit organization in Oklahoma City, OK, specializes in providing chiropractic care for mentally and physically challenged children. The center has had high success rates with children with such disorders as cerebral palsy, autism, sensory related disorders such as ADD/ADHD), colic, asthma, ear infections,  juvenile arthritis, and paralysis. Oklahaven has been helping children since 1962 and does not receive any government assistance.

The Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center is a teaching clinic for students in their final stage of internship prior to graduation from the doctor of chiropractic program. Interns, under direct supervision of licensed faculty chiropractors, provide quality and affordable chiropractic care to Upstate South Carolina residents through approximately 20,000 visits to the health center each year.

The facility serves as the hands-on learning site for the college’s chiropractic interns while also providing them with the experience essential to developing their clinical competence and creating a successful chiropractic practice after graduation. In addition, interns and faculty participate in spinal checks and health talks at community events throughout the year.

Sherman Granted Reaffirmation of Accreditation from CCE

On January 24, 2012, the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) notified Sherman College of Chiropractic that it has reaffirmed accreditation of the doctor of chiropractic degree program.  Reaffirmation marks the beginning of a new eight-year cycle of scheduled accreditation reporting and site visit activities.

“Reaffirmation is the result of much hard work and dedication by the employees, students, trustees and many supporters of Sherman College,” says Sherman accreditation liaison and Vice President for Academic Affairs Robert L. Irwin, D.C. “The accreditation process itself makes Sherman College a stronger institution. We have created a more comprehensive chiropractic education; made our program and our clinic more patient-centered to address the needs of healthcare consumers today; and improved teaching and learning, enhancing our ability to graduate skilled, compassionate and successful doctors of chiropractic to serve the public,” he adds. “We are happy to see our efforts acknowledged through the reaffirmation of accreditation.”

The reaffirmation process includes the college’s continuous assessment of program outcomes to determine its effectiveness in relation to its mission, goals and objectives.  Accreditation is a status granted by the CCE to doctor of chiropractic degree programs and institutions that have been found to meet the CCE Standards.

CCE is the agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education for accreditation of programs and institutions offering the doctor of chiropractic degree. As stated on its web site, “CCE seeks to insure the quality of chiropractic education in the United States by means of accreditation, educational improvement and public information. CCE develops accreditation criteria to assess how effectively programs or institutions plan, implement and evaluate their mission and goals, program objectives, inputs, resources and outcomes of their chiropractic programs.”

Naples Chiropractor Appointed to Board of Trustees at Sherman College

Naples, FL, chiropractor Shane J. Walker, D.C., has joined the Board of Trustees of his alma mater, Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC. Walker, who is in private practice at Trinity Chiropractic in Naples, is a 2000 Sherman College graduate and also holds a bachelor’s degree from Western Carolina University. He is current president of the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations (IFCO).

The Board of Trustees at Sherman College of Chiropractic is a visionary group of professionals dedicated to carrying out the college’s mission, goals and objectives to educate chiropractors, conduct relevant research and serve humanity with high quality health care. Members are elected to serve a four-year term.

“The day of my graduation from Sherman College, I knew that involvement with the college would be a part of my future,” Walker says of joining the Board. “Chiropractic is our entire life, and helping Sherman College take its place as the premier chiropractic institution is the logical next step for me. I see a huge vision for Sherman and I am honored to serve.”

As president of the IFCO, Walker led the organization to 25 percent growth in just 18 months – the result, he explains, of establishing a clear vision and plan. “I plan to bring the same energy and commitment to my role on the Board at Sherman College,” he says.

In addition to his service to the IFCO and private practice in Naples, Walker is host of the radio and television program, “The Wellness Hour.” He has served on the Board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation of Florida and the Shelter for Abused Women and Children in Naples.

Walker is a member of the Sherman College Board of Regents, a group of individuals dedicated to supporting quality chiropractic education at Sherman through their financial donations. Sherman College honored him with the Service Distinction Award in 2009 in recognition of his contributions, time and commitment to the chiropractic profession, the public and the college. He was honored with the B.J. Palmer Philosophy Distinction Award when he graduated in 2000.

Erik Beauvais, D.C., Awarded ROAR Career Advisor of the Year

of the Year by Sherman College of Chiropractic

 

Chiropractor Erik Beauvais, D.C., of Boiling Springs, SC, was recently named ROAR Career Advisor of the Year by Sherman College of Chiropractic in appreciation of his contributions, time and commitment to growing the chiropractic profession.

 

Dr. Beauvais is a 2009 graduate of Sherman College and is an inaugural member of the college’s elite Reach Out and Recruit (ROAR) Program. In addition to talking with future chiropractors about a career in chiropractic, Beauvais opened his office to the prospective students attending a Sherman College open house event and spoke about setting up a practice.

 

He has been active in helping Sherman College build its enrollment, speaking at community and college events, particularly at his alma mater, USC Upstate, and also at Clemson University.  Dr. Beauvais spoke on the Career Day Young Alumni Panel last year, attended a graduate fair at Converse College on behalf of Sherman College and spoke at the Health Professions Club at USC Upstate.

 

Referrals from doctors of chiropractic make up a large percentage of Sherman College students. Dr. Beauvais has mentored students in his chiropractic office, and he has already referred one student who plans to enroll in Sherman’s fall class this October.

 

Sherman College named its 2011 award recipients May 26-28 as part of Lyceum, an annual continuing education and homecoming event which is attended by hundreds of chiropractors throughout the U.S. and internationally. Lyceum is held on the college’s campus in Spartanburg, SC, and involves three days of seminars, special events and other programs.
