Sit in B.J.’s Chair at Sherman Lyceum!

A chair that belonged to B.J. Palmer has been added to the Brown House Chiropractic Museum, thanks to a donation from Dr. Kim Williams on behalf of the family of Dr. Sid Williams. Dr. Kim is president of the B.J. Palmer Historic Home Foundation.

The chair was part of the furnishings at B.J.’s home located on St. Armand's Key in Sarasota, Florida, and was in the home at the time of his death in 1961. B.J. himself, as well as many other chiropractors and guests, have sat in this very chair. Miguel Hastings transported the chair and other items donated by Dr. Kim from Atlanta to Sherman this week.

If you ask nicely, Museum Curator Dr. John Hart assures you can try out B.J.’s seat during Lyceum. The museum will be open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of Lyceum from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. If you haven’t been over to the museum in a while, please stop by – Mrs. Debbie Cordero, Roberta Thomas, maintenance staff, and work study students Kyle Geer and Courtney Ritenbaugh have been hard at work to re-design and prepare the museum for Lyceum.

Sherman College Lyceum, Career Day Events Engage Visitors, Community

Next week, more than 500 chiropractors and 70 prospective students from around the world will descend on Spartanburg as Sherman College of Chiropractic kicks off its 40th annual homecoming and continuing education event. Sherman College will celebrate Lyceum from Thursday to Saturday, May 23-25. The event is held each May on the college’s campus in Spartanburg and involves three days of seminars, reunions, alumni events and more.

The college will host a formal investiture ceremony for its fifth president, Edwin Cordero, D.C., on Thursday, May 23, at 7 p.m. Dr. Cordero is a dynamic leader passionate about inspiring, motivating and leading future chiropractors so they can make a positive impact in the communities they will serve around the world. He began his tenure at the college in January.

In addition to the investiture, key Lyceum events include a 40th anniversary celebration, an all-school reunion, and a 1970s-themed banquet to close the weekend. The college also hosts a number of special events for the public, including a Career Day for prospective students, a golf tournament, and a 5K race:

Spartanburg Methodist College Contracts with Sherman College to Provide Chiropractic Care for Student Athletes

Seeking to enhance its community outreach efforts and improve lives with chiropractic care, Sherman College of Chiropractic President Dr. Edwin Cordero turned to fellow College Town institution Spartanburg Methodist College’s President Dr. Colleen Perry Keith to form a collaborative agreement and provide chiropractic care for the benefit of SMC student athletes.

The partnership contracts Sherman College’s faculty and select student interns to work closely with SMC’s athletic training and medical staff and provide regular chiropractic care to SMC student athletes on their campus.

“The collaboration between SMC and Sherman College is born of a time-honored tradition of integrative care for athletes,” says Sherman’s Dean of Clinics Dr. Adam Morrell, a chiropractor and certified chiropractic sports practitioner. “Sherman interns will serve our partner college by bringing chiropractic to elite athletes. We anticipate contributing to the athletes’ enhanced performance with chiropractic care.”

SMC Athletic Director Tim Wallace was thrilled when presented with the idea of the partnership between the two colleges. “Anything we can do to benefit our student-athletes’ health and performance is good, and this relationship with Sherman should prove more than beneficial,” he says. “I look forward to seeing the positive effects that chiropractic care has on the performance of the Pioneers.”

SMC and Sherman College have had a long-standing, mutually beneficial relationship as members of the College Town consortium, a collaboration between Spartanburg’s seven colleges and the City. This new agreement honors the consortium’s goal of enhancing students’ academic, social and service opportunities through institutional collaborations and programmatic enrichment opportunities. In addition, the agreement aligns with Sherman College’s mission by providing students with opportunities for education, research and service to the community.

Dr. Morrell is already working with Sherman College’s research department to design research studies on sports performance and chiropractic care, and the college will keep outcomes measures on all participating athletes.

Sherman students providing care are in their final stage of internship prior to graduation from the doctor of chiropractic program. The teaching environment, coordinated by licensed doctors of chiropractic, allows interns to practice under close supervision and constant consultation.

Sherman College Lyceum Offers Inauguration, Inspiration, Education

The investiture of President Edwin Cordero, D.C., an inspiring program with founder Thomas A. Gelardi, D.C., 21 hours of continuing education credit, and a 40th anniversary celebration are just a few of the highlights of Sherman College of Chiropractic’s Lyceum 2013.

Sherman College will celebrate its “40 Years and still TIC-ing” Lyceum from Thursday to Saturday, May 23-25. The event is held each spring on the college’s campus in Spartanburg and involves three days of seminars, reunions, alumni events and more. This year’s Lyceum features more than 30 seminars with attendees able to receive up to 21 hours of continuing education credits.

Sherman Rugby Closes Fall Season, Takes on Div. I University of Tennessee; Furman/UT Match to Follow

Sherman College of Chiropractic will be hosting two exciting rugby matches this Saturday, November 17, as it closes its first season since the resurgence of the sport on campus after a 26-year hiatus.

At 1 p.m., Sherman takes on the University of Tennessee. UT is one of the top rugby teams in the country and advanced to the Division I Final Four last year; they have played on national television.

Following Sherman’s match with UT, Furman University will play the University of Tennessee’s B-side. Furman has one of the best small college programs in the nation, having won the Division III National Championships three times and earned runner-up twice; the team is coached by a Spartanburg native. The Furman team has also won seven South Championships – a region which covers 10 states.

Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in South Carolina. There are about a dozen high school clubs in the state (four years ago there were none), with two in Greenville, one in Easley, and others in Columbia and Charleston.

Sherman College Board Names President

Sherman College of Chiropractic has named Edwin Cordero, D.C., as the college’s fifth president, effective January 1, 2013. Peter Kevorkian, D.C., chair of the Sherman Board of Trustees, made the announcement on campus Tuesday, November 13. Dr. Kevorkian says the trustees look forward to working with Dr. Cordero as he continues to advance the college’s mission of preparing students to become doctors of chiropractic through education, research and service.

“I firmly believe the college has found in Dr. Cordero an outstanding leader who possesses not only vision and passion, but also an individual who has demonstrated over the years his commitment to the chiropractic profession and the vitalistic tenets upon which the profession was built,” Kevorkian says. “I am confident that Dr. Cordero will lead the college and its students to face the contemporary demands and health care needs of the public while holding steadfast to the traditional values upon which Sherman College was founded. We look forward to all we will accomplish under Dr. Cordero’s leadership and guidance.”

Dr. Cordero, a 1993 graduate of Life University’s College of Chiropractic, is a practicing chiropractor in Boynton Beach, FL. He frequently speaks at chiropractic associations, conferences and other organizations around the world with the goal of inspiring and motivating chiropractors and students to make a positive impact in their communities and the world. The Florida Chiropractic Society named him Chiropractor of the Year in 2011.

Fluent in Spanish, Dr. Cordero practiced in Puerto Rico for a year before establishing his current private practice in Florida in 1995. He is dedicated to serving the chiropractic profession and has participated in humanitarian chiropractic mission trips; he served as chiropractor for the Costa Rican team in the Central American Olympic Games for eight years.

Dr. Cordero says he is honored to serve as Sherman College’s next leader. “My vision as president is to lead Sherman College in becoming the preeminent chiropractic school in the U.S. and the world, and to strengthen its cultural legacy of outstanding academics, chiropractic philosophy, excellent faculty, technique and research,” he says.

Sherman College’s search for the next president began in May after Dr. Jon Schwartzbauer announced that he would be stepping down. After reviewing 20 applications and conducting preliminary interviews, the board narrowed the field to three candidates and released those names in October – Dr. Cordero, Dr. Joe Donofrio, and Dr. Shawn Powers. Schwartzbauer continued to serve as the college’s leader while the board conducted its search; his contract at Sherman ends on December 31, 2012.

Kevorkian says the board is grateful for Dr. Schwartzbauer’s leadership of the college. “So much has been accomplished during the past five years thanks to Dr. Schwartzbauer’s vision and his faithful service to the Sherman College,” he says. “The Board of Trustees sincerely appreciates the dedication, time and talent he generously shared with the college during his tenure.”

Rugby Returns to Sherman College

Rugby Returns to Sherman College of Chiropractic

In a quote often attributed to Winston Churchill, rugby is described as “a hooligan’s game played by gentlemen.” This fast-paced sport, well known for both its physical and social aspects, has returned to Sherman after a 26-year hiatus, thanks to the initiative of coach Adam Ashcraft, a former rugger and Sherman’s director of continuing education.

The team’s first home match will be Saturday, September 22, at 2 p.m. at Pride Park on the Sherman campus (2020 Springfield Road in Spartanburg) against seasoned competitors The Columbia Olde Grey. The Sherman College Rugby Football Club is part of the Palmetto Union of men’s teams and will play three seasons: fall, spring and summer. The club has six scheduled matches in the fall season and looks forward to the support of the Spartanburg and Sherman College communities; Ashcraft believes fans will enjoy watching the physical nature and the constant action of the sport.

He is enthusiastic about the club’s first season.  “While The Sherman Pride may lack the experience that many of our opponents have, we are training hard and expect an exciting season,” Ashcraft says. “Most of our players have never played rugby before, but all of them have latched on to the philosophy and passion of the game, and we can’t wait to take the pitch.”

After proposing the resurgence of Sherman rugby to Sherman President Jon Schwartzbauer, D.C., and the board of trustees earlier this year, Ashcraft officially started the program back up in March with much excitement from the college community and 100 percent administrative approval. The team has been practicing all summer.

“It’s more than a game, much more,” Ashcraft says of the camaraderie and the fraternal aspect of the sport. “I wanted to bring that community back to Sherman. It’s a philosophy of enjoying life to its fullest. When you go to a rugby match, people are laughing, smiling and really enjoying themselves, including and especially the players on the pitch.”

Ashcraft knows this from experience, having played rugby for 15 years, beginning as a high school senior in 1982 in Alexandria, VA, then moving on to college play at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (where he served as captain) and Florida State University. He later played with teams in Las Vegas, Phoenix, Atlanta and Richmond, as well as nine years in Knoxville, TN, finally ending his career as a player in 1996. He is certified as a level 200 coach through USA Rugby.

Spartanburg chiropractor and Sherman faculty member Dr. Kevin Power is also an integral part of the resurgence of Rugby at Sherman, having played fullback on the college’s original team in 1978 and now serving as backs coach.

While he acknowledges the challenge of molding a team that includes many inexperienced players, Power says it’s a task he knows will pay off. “I am immensely proud of our young men and the effort, energy and enthusiasm that they are bringing to the game,” he says. “I believe this team will be a great rallying point for the campus community and that they will be tremendous representatives of Sherman College as we travel to compete against other teams.”

Sherman College to Research Correlation between Chiropractic Care and Reduction in Seizure Activity; Patients Being Accepted

Jasen Van Dyke has seen first-hand the positive effects of chiropractic care on epileptic patients; after beginning chiropractic care, his young daughter, Lilli, experienced a dramatic reduction of seizures, and her quality of life continues to improve under regular care.

In fact, after sharing Lilli’s story with other parents, Van Dyke eventually decided to leave a successful career and enroll in Sherman College’s doctor of chiropractic program. Now less than a year away from graduation, he intends to take his personal observations with his daughter’s case a step further by piloting a research project studying the correlation between chiropractic care and seizure activity, autonomic nerve function, and quality of life.

“Having a daughter with epilepsy,” Van Dyke says, “I know that I want to open a family practice with an emphasis on special needs. All bodies function best without nerve interference, including those with special needs. I want to give hope to parents with no hope,” he says, thinking back to the days when he and his wife, Jennifer, were searching for an answer that would help their own child. Before getting started in practice, though, he’s working on a research project (guided by his advisor, Sherman College’s Assistant Director of Research, Dr. John Hart) studying chiropractic’s effects on seizure activity and the function of the autonomic nervous system.

Van Dyke has found several case studies that indicate improvement in autonomic function of patients with cerebral palsy (like his daughter, Lilli) who received chiropractic care to remove vertebral subluxations, which are misalignments of the bones of the spine. He’s also studied research that shows a correlation between the correction of subluxations and positive effects on the autonomic nervous system. But, he says, autonomic nervous system involvement in patients with epilepsy has rarely been studied and has shown conflicting results.

“I’m proposing that the correlation between chiropractic care and the reported resultant decrease in seizure activity is due to the improvement or regulation of autonomic function upon removal of subluxations,” Van Dyke explains.

Patients Being Accepted

Up to 30 patients of any age with a history of epilepsy will be accepted for the study. The group will be randomized into an intervention group and a placebo group. The intervention group will receive chiropractic care to remove subluxations. Both groups will undergo standard Sherman College protocols to locate and analyze vertebral subluxation(s); x-rays will be used to help assess listings if deemed clinically necessary.

The medically diagnosed causation for patients’ epilepsy will be documented, but causation alone will not play a role in determining eligibility for study participation. The intervention group will receive free chiropractic care at the Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center for the duration of the study, and the placebo group will receive free chiropractic care at the Health Center for a time equivalent to the study duration. After consulting with a pediatric neurologist of Greenville Hospital System, Van Dyke has determined that heart rate variability (HRV) will be used to assess the function of the autonomic nervous system. Autonomic assessment will also include thermal pattern analysis (TPA) findings.

Patients will be asked to complete health/wellness surveys and keep a seizure log to assess frequency, duration, and severity of seizure activity throughout the plan of care and the study, which should last approximately two to three months. Active Military Receive Discount at Sherman’s Chiropractic Health Center

Thanks to the initiative of chiropractic student and military wife Melanie Pelletier, active members of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy and National Guard now receive discounted services at the Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center.

“I’ve always thought you should try to give back to the people who are taking care of you,” says Pelletier, who hopes to serve as a chiropractor for the military following graduation from Sherman. “These people have been my family for three years now, taking care of me throughout college.” Her husband, Josh, is a crew chief with the Air National Guard; he has been stationed in Afghanistan since April and is scheduled to return home in August.

Active military members will pay just $10 per visit at the Chiropractic Health Center when they show their military ID. The college’s on-campus Health Center (where senior students intern under the close supervision of licensed doctors of chiropractic) provides quality and affordable chiropractic care to the local community through nearly 20,000 patient visits per year.

The facility is a teaching clinic for chiropractic students who are in their final stage of internship prior to graduation from the doctor of chiropractic program. The teaching environment, coordinated by licensed doctors of chiropractic, allows interns to practice chiropractic under close supervision and constant consultation.
