Sherman College WCCS

Wccs

The World Congress of Chiropractic Student (WCCS) is an international forum representing the chiropractic profession. Active membership consists of students from 33 chiropractic colleges from 5 continents. The WCCS, which has been running since 1979, will meet for the 2008 annual conference on August 7-12 in Mexico City, Mexico at UNEVE (Universidad Estatal del Valle de Ecatepec) to discuss issues pertinent to the chiropractic profession. Last year the Sherman Chapter of WCCS sent 3 delegates to Johannesburg, South Africa. If funds permit, we hope to send all 9 of our delegates to Mexico City.

The 2009 Congress will take place at NZCC (New Zealand Chiropractic College).

Some new stuff!

If you haven't already seen it, check out our new homepage!  The buttons of the left side of the page will direct you to important parts of the website for the future chiropractic student.

While you are there, take a look at What's New at Sherman!  There are a few new slideshows up there, one from Fun Day and one from our Sherman Halloween event, as well as direct links and pictures to our student and faculty bloggers.  This page will be dynamic, so if you have any suggestions for things you would like to see, just let me know!

And lastly, speaking of bloggers, we have a new edition to our faculty blog.  We have asked several faculty members to contribute to our revised "From the Faculty Blog".  There are a few posts up there now...with lots more to come!

Happy reading!

Faculty spotlight: Max Ivanov, M.D.

Facyear2007_0001Basic Sciences instructor Max Ivanov, M.D., has been a favorite at Sherman almost since his arrival at the college in 1999, but now it’s official – Ivanov was named Faculty Member of the Year 2007.
The Faculty Member of the Year award recognizes a faculty member who is an excellent instructor; a moral and ethical inspiration to students and colleagues; a role-model in working to advance the practice of subluxation centered chiropractic; and a person who participates in college events and other activities outside the classroom that promote the mission of Sherman College.
Comments on ballots of those voting for Ivanov included the following: “He is interesting and passionate about the subjects he teaches,” “He keeps us focused” and “Dr. Ivanov is really great at engaging the students in ways that explain the material.” Students cite Ivanov’s ability to prepare them well for national board exams and his willingness to treat them as colleagues and true graduate students.
Ivanov, a native of Russia, holds an M.D. from Tver Medical Academy and teaches Cardio Diagnosis, Physiology Lab, Cardio Physiology and Fluids. Aside from teaching, Ivanov enjoys playing basketball, reading books and magazines and spending time with friends.

Farewell to the Unicorn

Submit your nomination for Sherman’s next mascot

Unicorn1982 After reaching a consensus that it is time to change the college’s mascot, Shermanadministrators, faculty and board members recently gave the go-ahead for a search to name a new mascot. The unicorn has been the mascot since early in the college’s history; it was chosen for its association with purity, strength and fierceness against evil.

Dean of Student Affairs LaShanda Hutto says students have become indifferent about the unicorn and have found it difficult to use as a mascot for the increasing number of Sherman community athletic teams.

“In most collegiate environments, the mascot serves as a source of branding and represents the prideful spirit of the institution,” Hutto says. “It is our hope that our quest for the new mascot will possess all of these things. While the unicorn mascot is appropriate if you understand the background behind it, current students want something that better represents the college today.”

Students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends are invited to submit their nominations for the new mascot. Submission deadline is Friday, December 14, 2007. Between January 28 and February 15, 2008, the college community will vote on all submissions to determine the top five selections. On March 3-14, 2008, the top five choices will be posted and voted on for a final decision. The new mascot will be announced during Lyceum 2008.

The person submitting the winning mascot idea will receive a gift certificate from the Sherman College Bookstore. In the event of a tie, a runoff will occur. If two individuals submit the same mascot but different rationales, we will include both mascot submissions with the different explanations, so it is important to include the logic behind your suggestion.

To submit your suggestion for Sherman’s new mascot, fill out the quick online form located here. You must include an explanation for your suggestion to be considered.

Meet Daria!

We have a brand new Admission Representative who will be working closely with future chiropractic students and traveling the country meeting people!  I asked her to write a little introduction, and this is what she said:

Daria_2 I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I was raised half of my life around Toronto, Ontario and the other half in Sayre, Pennsylvania.

I went fairly further away from my hometown than most of the people I knew when I went away to college. I did not know a single person when I began attending West Chester University, which is about 40 minutes outside of Philadelphia.

I knew what major I wanted to declare, Communication Studies, before I even entered college and I picked up a minor of Political Science my junior year. I graduated in May 2007, magna cum laude. I have always loved working with people and helping people achieve better lives for themselves.

I happened to get a job as a Chiropractic Assistant during my senior year of college working for a chiropractor that went to Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic for 3 years. I saw Dr. Schaffer help so many people during my time at his office. I especially appreciated that he educated each and every patient, as well as those of us who worked for him, about chiropractic philosophy and technique. He gave us more information every day about chiropractic and I truly feel that I learned something new each day.

The summer after graduation, my boyfriend and I moved to Greenville. One day, as I was searching the web for job postings, I happened to come across a job listing from Sherman College. At that point, I realized that something in the universe was pulling me towards Sherman College. I applied for the job posting, as an Admission Representative, as soon as I finished reading the description. A few days later, human resources called me in for my first interview and the rest is history.

I am very excited about beginning my career at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic. I look forward to getting on the road and meeting prospective students from all around the country. I have set many personal goals for myself and hope to increase enrollment in our wonderful Doctor of Chiropractic program as much as I can.

I enjoy going out to dinner and movies, reading, spending time with my boyfriend, and any type of travel.

Chiro Games in South Florida

Do you live in Florida?  If you do, you might want to check out the Chiro Games being held in Stuart this weekend.  Greg and Jaclyn are there, and they promised me a lot of pictures and video and a recap of all of the events on their blogs when the return!

I can't wait to hear how all of the Sherman teams do!  Here is a picture I took this week of two of our players from the soccer team as they displayed their new uniforms.  The team sold nachos in the Spine Dining Cafe to raise money for their trip.  For those of you who have visited campus, you might recognize Craig Dobek on the left...he is also one of our tour guides!
