Instant Messaging Keeps Sherman College Connected to Prospective Students

Today’s prospective students are demanding more than just printed viewbooks, brochures and phone calls, says Sherman College Director of Admissions Lisa Hildebrand, M.A. They expect immediate, personal contact.

In fact, nationwide trends show that these millennial students (born after 1981) are revolutionizing the way colleges communicate. Even interactive higher education recruiting firms like TargetX say schools that ignore the revolution will risk undermining their marketing efforts. Sherman_im_detail

Therefore, to help meet the needs of this new generation and to continue building the future of the chiropractic profession, Sherman College has launched an instant-messaging program to interact with prospective students. Admission representatives began using instant messaging this spring and have found it a useful tool in the enrollment process.

A funny thing....

I have traveled quite a bit in the last 10 years that I have been here at Sherman College.  I have been to California several times, journeyed up and down the East Coast and even visited Canada a few times recruiting prospective students and attending state and organization chiropractic conventions.  I used to travel a whole lot more, and I miss it sometimes.  I have met some wonderful people and explored places that I would never had the chance to visit had it not been for this job.

I have seen some interesting, and quite funny things on these travels- airports are great places to people watch- but last month I saw something so funny, I just had to share it!  I drove to Myrtle Beach to visit Coastal Carolina University, and on my way home, I stopped overnight in Florence, SC at a very nice hotel surrounded by stores and chain restaurants.  On my way out the next morning, there were some bubbles near my car, but I didn't think too much about it- maybe there was a carwash nearby.  But...as I drove out of the complex...this is what I saw:

I thought it was quite funny...quickly snapped the picture...and laughed about it most of the way home!!

Busy busy!

I have been in and out of the office quite a bit over the last few weeks, making school visits and attending graduate school fairs and meeting students and attending chiropractic conventions.  We are very busy here at Sherman College- the month of October is always the busiest month of the year- but it is exciting, too.  We meet so many students, at these fairs, or those who come to tour the campus, that all of the hours put in make it so worth it!

Take today for example:  we had about 60 students from a local high school and their instructors on campus for a tour of our Health Center and Anatomy Lab and to learn more about chiropractic as a career.  And then we had three other students arrive for personal tours with a student tour guide in the afternoon.  It was a lot for the three of us in the office to handle, but it was FUN, too!

So, the point of all of this is:  Come and visit us!!  We would love to have you!

Anyway, here is a picture of Alison and me yesterday, taken at the Converse College Graduate School Fair.  We had a great time!

Spartanburg Recognized As Bicycle-Friendly Community

Spartanburg Recognized as the First City in South Carolina to Receive Bicycle-Friendly Community Recognition

SPARTANBURG (September 25, 2007) The City of Spartanburg has been nationally designated as a Bronze Level, Bicycle-Friendly Community from The League of American Bicyclists and proclaimed as the first city in South Carolina to receive such an honor.

The criteria used by national reviewers are:

  • The community had systems in place to train children and adult cyclists.
  • Bicyclists were included in the City’s transportation plan.
  • Police officers understood and enforced bicyclists’ rights and responsibilities.
  • The community participated in Bike Month, hosted community bike rides and overall encouraged cycling.

The City of Spartanburg was recognized for the recently completed two-mile rail-trail through downtown which was financed with more than $1 million in local funds.

The City of Spartanburg’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee was established in February 2006 under the direction of Mayor Barnet.  Its chartered purpose is to promote policies, practices and attitudes to increase safety and accessibility of bicycling and walking for both transportation and recreation throughout the City of Spartanburg.

The Bike Town Initiative was created in 2004 with the goal of earning Spartanburg the designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community by 2007.  It is funded by Mary Black Foundation and directed by Partners for Active Living.

The Bicycle-Friendly Community Campaign is an awards program of the League of American Bicyclists that recognizes municipalities that actively support bicycling.   On September 29, 2006, the City of Spartanburg was the first in the state to receive Honorable Mention from the Bicycle-Friendly Community Campaign.

Another new blog....

So, if you get to this blog by our main blog page, then you have probably already noticed that we have another new blogger....me!  Actually, it is a collaborative effort between me and Karen Rhodes, our Director of Public Relations, that we call Sherman Snapshots!  We had the wonderful idea to make a photo blog, with lots of pictures from around the Sherman campus and the Spartanburg area, so that those of you who are unfamiliar with Spartanburg and South Carolina can see pictures to really get a feel for what it is like here!

The blog has been up for about a week now, and there are some pictures there now...we promise at least a new picture a week, but probably more...so if you have any suggestions for what you would like to see, just let us know!

Here is a picture of me that Karen took as we did a short tour around the city....lots more to come!!

Coastal Carolina Inauguration

Sixty-three representatives from colleges and universities across the country and the world marched in the procession for

Coastal Carolina University

President David A. DeCenzo’s inauguration on Friday, September 14, and I was honored to be among them representing Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic.

Other constituents participating in the inauguration ceremony included Coastal faculty, staff, students, emeritus faculty, alumni, board of trustees and more. David A. DeCenzo became the second president of Coastal Carolina University on May 7, 2007.

It was a beautiful day in Myrtle Beach, and a very dignified ceremony and a fun-filled celebration. As I dressed in my college regalia, I couldn’t help but think about the fact that soon (next Lyceum, in fact), Sherman College will be having its own investiture of President Jon Schwartzbauer, D.C. – and now I have lots of ideas to share with the Sherman community once we begin planning. It is an exciting time to be at Sherman College!
