On this fall break, I have had a chance to catch-up on some reading. Some books read were based on parenting tips (how to not lose your mind), some books were from the Bible, and other books were GREEN! Now for those of you uninformed, the green books are our foundation. These books are authored by none other than the father of Chiropractic, Dr. B.J. Palmer.
I encourage anyone thinking about a career in this field to check out one of these books. If you want to know where B.J. stood on issues of full spine adjusting, alternative therapies, medicine, upper cervical care, etc. look to these books. The great thing about B.J. is that he doesn't mix words. If you read his works, you will know exactly what he thinks. Volume 18, for me, is by far the greatest hitter of them all. But for this break, I am taking on (slowly might I add, due to some laziness) Volume 24, Fight To Climb.
In Fight To Climb, B.J. addresses questions from Chiropractors and students. This book was created in 1950, roughly 11 years before his death. He addresses issues of "Goat Feathers" (p.g. 162), "Fogs" (p.g. 97), and "The Specific" (p.g. 167). If you want to know what these topics are, get the book! And if you want to know where you can get them, look to Sherman's bookstore.
B.J. speaks through the ages. His information and opinions hold just as true today as they did when he was alive. After all, he was THE SCIENCE behind the philosophy. Do not let anyone tell you differently. His work was so solid that even the leaders in the medical field could not deny it. Dr. and Mrs. Mayo personally used B.J.'s services (as well as sent trouble patients to the Palmer clinic). If you could think it, B.J. did it. In my humble opinion, B.J. was nothing shy of a genius. And we can all still learn from him...through his writings.

Right on Jaime! BJ's works are still as relevant, in fact more so, today than they were yesterday. What an incredible study for future Chiropractors, and if we miss looking at BJ's writings then we are robbing ourselves of our past but also our future in Chiropractic.
We are currently reading Fight to Climb as well and what a read it is! Definitely enjoyed the story of "Goat Feathers!"
Keep up the good work and we will hopefully see you and all your classmates at the Upper Cervical Evolution April 2009 (www.uppercervicalevolution.com). Keep Smiling!
