Growing up in a dental family, I always thought that I would end up a doctor someday. After spending time in my father’s practice cleaning teeth and shooting x-rays, it became apparent that I had no real love for putting my hands in people’s mouths. I did, however, enjoy the interaction with patients. It was a children’s practice, so it was more play than work! Long story short – I went to work after college (non health care field) and started my own business in the contracting world.
It took a back injury to get me on the path to chiropractic. After “traditional” medical doctors tried pain killers with no results (just masking the continuing damage that I was inflicting upon myself), I was persuaded to go see a chiropractor. I say, “persuaded” because I really did think that chiropractors were the fish oil salesman of the health care world! Boy, was I wrong! It did not take long before I was back in top shape again, all WITHOUT drugs or surgery.
My wife had just finished going back to college to get her degree and suggested that I think about going back to school again. I joked with her that the only thing that I could imagine wanting to go back to school for again would be chiropractic. A week or so later, she gave me an information package that she had requested from Sherman College. We talked about it and decided to close the business, uproot the family and move to Spartanburg.
I know that I made the right decision to come to Sherman. The small school atmosphere is nice and the faculty and students really are like a family here. I’m about 10 years older than most of my classmates, but there are students here that are even older than I am, so it really is true that you are never too old to do something new. My wife, Kameron, and daughter, Rachel, are very supportive and are believers in the power of chiropractic. I am very fortunate to have them here with me. I’m excited about the future and even think that the gray hair that is starting to show might come in handy when I graduate!
