April Fools Dr. Joe

Before the month of April ends I need to share this story with you. Dr. Joe Donofrio's (Dean of Clinical Science) office is right across the hall from mine.

His students cleverly engineered the joke after hours on April 1 to catch Dr. Joe off guard the following morning. Who would suspect an April Fools Day prank on April 2?  Here is what Dr. Joe Donofrio found when he opened his office door at Sherman College that morning.

Look Who Stopped In

Deckbatton Alumnus Dave Batton from Royal Oak, MI, stopped by campus while in town this week. Dr. Batton visited with faculty and former classmates like Philosophy Department chair Bill Decken pictured here (left) with Dr. Batton.

All alumni are welcome to stop in when you're in town or passing through. We love to see you and hear about your activities. And if you haven't been here in a while, we love to show you the changes on campus.

Hope to see you soon!

PA Reunion was Fun

The ADIO/PCSC Reunion was last night. I'll upload some photos as soon as I can and let you glimpse at the action. The highlight for me was listening to everyone introduce themselves and tell how they are connected to Penn Straight. The pioneer class alumni also shared memories from the college's early days. Sherman College is proud of these trailblazers and priviledged to hold their academic records after their alma mater closed. I feel honored to have been a part of their reunion and look forward to seeing them on campus for Lyceum next month.

Philadelphia Area Alumni Events

I'm in the area north of Phillie this week for 2 alumni events--a reunion party in Fort Washington for ADIO Institute / Penn Straight alumni, administrators, faculty and staff on Saturday, April 5 and a reception for Sherman alumni and friends in Harleysville on Tuesday, April 9. In between the two events I'll be visiting at alumni practices.

I arrived tonight and met FSCO representative Renee Hillman for dinner and a high school musical. We went to Freedom High School to see Bye, Bye Birdie, a really fun performance. I was impressed with the talent of these young people, some of whom may one day come to Sherman College to study chiropractic (and entertain us on campus at a future Spizz Day). I was especially impressed with Amanda Kostalis as Rose. She had a great voice. I also liked Cameron Benda who played Harvey Johnson with a great deal of enthusiasm and expression.  It was fun a fun way to start my visit to Pennsylvania. Tomorrow night is the Penn Straight Reunion so I'll be heading down to Fort Washington in the early afternoon. I'm eager to see Sandy Levenson and Judy Campanale who planned the event and catch up with them as we set up the banquet room with displays and favors. Dave Smith will be joining us to set up his sound equipment. In addition to practicing chiropractic he's quite the DJ.

Of course our president Jon Schwartzbauer will be attending as well as several Sherman alumni who served as faculty, administrators or board members. It will be great to see old friends and meet some new ones.

Good Morning America Segment on Chiropractic

The Good Morning America Segment on chropractic is creating quite the buzz. Have you seen it? I like it because it casts a positive light on the profession. Watch it here. The segment is about a study by the University of Chicago that looked at the possible connection between a spinal adjustment and a decrease in blood pressure. The double blind study showed a significant drop (an average of 17 points) in blood pressure for patients with hypertension after a specific chiropractic adjustment of C1. It was especially satisfying to hear the Good Morning America medical editor comment that the research was intriguing and worthy of further study. “…I'm telling you, this catches our attention because of a significant drop in blood pressure. It absolutely deserves more study," Dr. Tim Johnson said.
Alumni watching the segment will no doubt recognize that the specific chiropractic adjustment referred to on the program is a part of the education learned here at Sherman College.  Go Sherman!
