Vacationing Alumni Stop in for a Visit

At all times of the year, but especially during the summer months we enjoy surprise visits from alumni passing through the area on the way to or from a vacation destination or visiting friends. Sometimes Spartanburg is the vacation destination when they are visiting family or friends in the area.

Rick Bishop 004 This week we received a visit from Dr. Rick Bishop and his wife, Julie, from Pennsylvania.  They had nothing but good comments about the changes on campus. Any alum who hasn't been on campus in a few years just loves the entrance, student plaza and the reception area in the atrium part of the Scallon Building. Even when you've seen it in pictures, you can't help but be impressed the first time to come up the driveway and circle around the small garden and park in front of the plaza.

Dr. Bishop had not yet our president, Jon Schwartzbauer, D.C., and Dr. Jon was available so they had a brief visit and I was able to get a photo before they left.

Last week we saw Dr. William May from New Mexico. We were glad to meet him and hear a few stories about the old days when he and Dr. Taylor took motorcycle rides together. I regret that I didn't think to get a photo, but I'll have found memories of our chat in the lobby near the donor recognition boards.

It was a shame that neither of these docs got to see us while classes are in session. Our three week summer break ends with the July 4 holiday and we welcome an incoming class on Monday, July 6. By Tuesday the rest of the students and faculty will be back and we'll feel all that good, positive energy that permeates the campus when everyone is here. I look forward to that. I've missed everyone!

I hope you have a wonderful July 4 holiday weekend if you reside in the United States, and a wonderful non-holiday weekend if you live elsewhere.

Sherman Yellow Ribbon School News in SJH

I'm on vacation this week, but through the magic of computers I can still tell you that Sherman was in the local newspaper again in an article about us beling one of three Yellow Ribbon colleges in Spartanburg.

Read the article in the Spartanburg Herald Journal.

Recession Proof Your Business with Scott McLeod’s Help

Alumnus Scott McLeod, D.C., ’92, of Shelby Township, MI, co-authored 30 Day Total Business Makeover which was published in December 2008. Scott tells me it’s already on the Bestsellers List. According to the website for the book, “Whether you are just starting your business or already have a thriving enterprise, let this book teach you how to reach your goals faster with less effort in every economy!” Might be worth checking out, eh? Click on the link below to read more. http://drscottmcleod.tripod.com/book/

I'll be adding Scott to my list of published book authors. Anyone else have a book published recently? Tell me about it! Better yet, send me some copies for the Sherman College Library so that we can share it with students and faculty and include it in our display of Alumni Authors at Lyceum. Contact me via email at mroldan@sherman.edu.

    Sherman Alumni Authors

The PR Office passed this on to me last week: Jones author releases new juvenile fiction. It’s an article about the release of a book authored by Sherman graduate Aaron Fisher, D.C. ’07. The book is about unfailing friendship between two boys who meet at school and a tragic turn of events. Read more about the book here.

I also saw on Facebook today news of the impending release (July 4) of Promises by another Sherman alum, Mary Helen Hensley, D.C., ’98. This is a memoir and Mary Helen tells me there are some good stories from and about her days at Sherman. Rut roh!
Read an interview with Mary Helen here.

I'm delighted to add the names of these two alumni to my growing list of Sherman Alumni Authors and hope to include actual copies of their books in our Alumni Author Book display during Lyceum next year.

Sherman College is a Yellow Ribbon School

Sherman College is a Yellow Ribbon School. What does that mean? It means that it has agreed to honor veterans who served our country after September 10, 2001 according to the specifications of the 9/11 GE Bill with tuition assistance. Schools voluntarily sign on for this education enhancement program and agree to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate.  The school can contribute up to 50% of those expenses and VA will match the same amount as the institution.

Sherman is one of the first chiropractic colleges to sign on for this program. If you know of veterans looking to pursue chiropractic as a career please refer them to Sherman College for more information about this program.
